Max-affine estimators for convex stochastic programming

چکیده
In this paper, we consider two sequential decision making problems with a convexity structure, namely an energy storage optimization task and a multi-product assembly example. We formulate these problems in the stochastic programming framework and discuss an approximate dynamic programming technique for their solutions. As the cost-to-go functions are convex in these cases, we use max-affine estimates for their approximations. To train such a max-affine estimate, we provide a new convex regression algorithm, and evaluate it empirically for these planning scenarios.

Near-optimal max-affine estimators for convex regression
This paper considers least squares estimators for regression problems over convex, uniformly bounded, uniformly Lipschitz function classes minimizing the empirical risk over max-affine functions (the maximum of finitely many affine functions). Based on new results on nonlinear nonparametric regression and on the approximation accuracy of maxaffine functions, these estimators are proved to achie...
متن کاملConsistency of Sample Estimates of Risk Averse Stochastic Programs
In this paper we study asymptotic consistency of law invariant convex risk measures and the corresponding risk averse stochastic programming problems for independent identically distributed data. Under mild regularity conditions we prove a Law of Large Numbers and epiconvergence of the corresponding statistical estimators. This can be applied in a straightforward way to establishing convergence...
متن کاملOptimal bounds for aggregation of affine estimators
We study the problem of aggregation of estimators when the estimators are not independent of the data used for aggregation and no sample splitting is allowed. If the estimators are deterministic vectors, it is well known that the minimax rate of aggregation is of order log(M), where M is the number of estimators to aggregate. It is proved that for affine estimators, the minimax rate of aggregat...
متن کاملStep size adaptation in first-order method for stochastic strongly convex programming
where f(.) : Γf → R is an unknown, not necessarily smooth, multivariate and λ-strongly convex function, with Γf its convex definition domain. The algorithm is not allowed to accurately sample f(.) by any means since f(.) itself is unknown. Instead the algorithm can call stochastic oracles ω̃(.) at chosen points x̃1, . . . , x̃n, which are unbiased and independent probabilistic estimators of the fi...
متن کاملAn approximation method for computing the expected value of max-affine expressions
Expected values of max-affine expressions appear in optimization problems for various stochastic systems, such as in model predictive control (MPC) for stochastic max-plus-linear systems, in identification of stochastic max-plus-linear systems, and in control of stochastic monotonic piecewise affine systems. Solving these optimization problems involves the computation of the expected value of t...
